Some Democrats in Congress want to send Americans more money during the coronavirus pandemic.
Sens. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Ed Markey, D-Mass., are scheduled to unveil their Monthly Economic Crisis Support Act today, Politico reports.
The proposal would expand on the $1,200 stimulus check already sent to most Americans.
The bill would send a $2,000 check each month to people who make less than $120,000. It would expand to $4,000 for married couples who file taxes jointly. If a couple has children, they would receive $2,000 for each child up to three.
“Congress has a responsibility to make sure that every working-class household in America receives a $2,000 emergency payment a month for each family member,” Sanders said in a statement.
Harris said Congress hasn’t done enough “to meet the needs of this historic crisis.” Markey said paying Americans cash is “the most direct and efficient mechanism for delivering economic relief to those most vulnerable.”
Payments would be retroactive to March and last until three months after the Health and Human Services Department has declared the public health emergency over.
The legislation would prevent debt collectors from taking the payments.
Americans would receive the money regardless of whether they have a Social Security number or filed taxes last year.
