Senate Democrats want President Donald Trump to follow through on his push for "comprehensive background checks" for gun buyers. And they're pressing him to endorse legislation that would extend the pre-purchase checks at least to online and gun show sales.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer joined fellow Democratic Sens. Bill Nelson, Chris Murphy and Amy Klobuchar in releasing a letter to Trump urging him to act on commonsense gun safety legislation.
They're making their case to Trump before the president hosts a meeting with a bipartisan group of lawmakers to discuss school safety and possible gun legislation.
"In order to ensure that background checks are truly comprehensive, at minimum it is essential that we close both the gun show and internet sales loopholes. It makes no sense that an individual who is denied a gun by a federally licensed dealer can simply visit a gun show or go online to purchase the same gun that they were denied at the store," the senators wrote.
"We write today to request that you strongly support legislation that closes those loopholes for good."
Trump tweeted over the weekend that he'd strongly be pushing "Comprehensive Background Checks with an emphasis on Mental Health."
The Democratic senators say in their letter that "we couldn't agree more."
Legislation in the Senate would to close what critics call the gun show and online sales loophole. The Democrats say if Trump gave an endorsement, that measure would stand a better chance of passage.
