The announcement of a longtime Middle East "extreme war hawk" John Bolton, a former United Nations ambassador, as President Donald Trump's next national security adviser raised the dander of Democrats on Capitol Hill on Thursday night.
Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., rebuked President Trump's building of a "war Cabinet."
Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., called Bolton the "wrong person" to replace resigned National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster.
Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., says the move represents an administration in "full throttle in reverse."
Rep. Brendan Boyle, D-Pa., tweeted and issued a statement, calling Bolton a "dangerous radical" and urging President Trump reconsider the move.
"John Bolton is a dangerous radical," Boyle's statement read. "President Trump's decision to make Bolton his National Security Advisor is deeply disturbing.
"John Bolton has spent his entire career pushing fringe conspiracy theories, espousing radical ideas about multilateralism, and undermining key alliances across the world. He helped recklessly drive our country into the Iraq War and has been credibly accused of manipulating U.S. intelligence to do so. He was bounced out of the George W. Bush administration because he was too extreme even for them.
"I strongly oppose this appointment and urge the President to reconsider. The last place John Bolton should be is sitting next to the President of the United States advising him on matters of war and peace."
