Stung by President Donald Trump's harsh accusations that Democrats Have "totally abandoned DACA," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told reporters Friday Trump must "step up and lead" on immigration and gun control.
"It's clear to everyone but President Trump that it was he who forced the DACA issue when he ended the program," Schumer said, referring to the Deferred Action for Childhood arrivals program, which allows children brought into the United States to work and attend school.
"His refusal to take yes for an answer led to his partisan plan that only got 39 votes. Now he's headed in the same direction on gun safety," Schumer added.
Trump rejected a bipartisan immigration deal because it didn't contain money for a border wall, nor his proposal to roll back legal immigration.
Schumer said Trump's call for bipartisanship "will ring hollow" if he "continues down this path."
Schumer spoke after Trump's speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).
"Senate Democrats and the House Democrats have totally abandoned DACA," Trump said. "They don't even talk to me about it."
Trump also told the CPAC audience Congress should pass some gun legislation, like stronger background checks, raising the age to buy a rifle to 21 from 18, or arming some teachers. But, Democrats note, he has stayed silent on whether to ban assault weapons like the AR-15 used in last week's Florida school shooting.
