Democrats Have Flipped Six State Legislative Seats in 2017

Democrats have flipped six state legislative seats in 2017, including two Tuesday, while Republicans have not won any races, CNN reported Wednesday.

The races won Tuesday were special elections in Oklahoma and New Hampshire, states Donald Trump carried by double digits in the 2016 election. Democrats had already won another seat in New Hampshire, two in Oklahoma, and one in New York, and the party has outperformed Hillary Clinton's numbers in those districts, according to the Daily Kos.

The seats Democrats won Tuesday were in races where a Republican had previously resigned. The number of open seats in the House is up to 17 following the retirement of three GOP members last week, according to the Daily Kos, a concerning number for the party as Republicans did not reach the same number until December 2007 in the 2008 cycle.

"It's not about the current climate," National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Steve Stivers said Friday. "We are going to see more retirements because right now we are so below the historic average of retirements."
