A group of Democrats is calling on Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price to resign because he has opted to spend hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars on private jets this year.
A letter signed by five House Democrats — Reps. Ruben Gallego (Arizona), Ted Lieu (California), Brenda Lawrence (Michigan), Jamie Raskin (Maryland), and Pramila Jayapal (Washington) — accused Price of violating the American public's trust through the use of corporate-style jets to whisk him around the country.
"On September 19th, Politico reported that you had chartered a private jet on several short official trips, including a $25,000 private flight from Washington, D.C. to Philadelphia and back — a trip that would at most cost $725 round-trip on a commercial airline," the letter reads. "It has since come to light that you have taken more than 24 privately chartered flights in your time as Secretary, costing the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) more than $400,000.
"This represents a gross misuse of public funds that could have been spent on efforts to improve the health and well-being of the American people."
The letter also accused Price of using insider information to trade healthcare stocks when he was a member of Congress.
"The American people deserve cabinet secretaries who place the public good above their own private interests. For these reasons, we urge you to immediately announce your resignation from the Office of Secretary of Health and Human Services," the letter reads.
President Donald Trump said Wednesday he is "not happy" with Price's decision to fly on private jets as opposed to commercial airliners.
The HHS Office of Inspector General is investigating Price's use of the private flights. The House Oversight Committee has requested documents related to them as well.
