Democrats are widening their lead in polls testing a generic Congressional ballot as Americans appear to be no longer focused on the improving economy, The Hill reported.
Until recently, Republicans had been cutting into the Democrats’ lead in generic ballot questions. President Donald Trump had even taken to Twitter to tout an unnamed "generic poll" showing Republicans ahead.
But a CNN poll on Monday showed 54 percent of voters saying they would support a Democrat in their congressional district, compared to 38 percent who would back a Republican candidate.
And according to the polling average tracked by RealClearPolitics, Democrats have an 8.5 lead over Republicans. The Hill noted Republicans had closed the gap to 7 points just weeks ago.
The earlier Republican gains had raised hopes the GOP could hold onto its majority in Congress in the midterm elections.
But now the Democrats once again appear to be gaining momentum, according to the Hill.
In addition to a string of new White House controversies, the battle over gun control seems to have shifted Americans’ attention away from the economy and the benefits of the tax reform package. In addition, special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe appears to have intensified, the website note.
"It’s a very simple equation," GOP pollster Frank Luntz said. "When Republicans are talking about the tax bill and the economy, they are winning. When they are talking about or explaining anything else, they aren’t."
And former Republican National Committee spokesman Doug Heye added: "Democrats are clearly showing up in increased numbers to make their voice heard. Republicans? Not so much. This looks like a mirror image of the Obama midterm problem, where enough of his base stayed home to cost Democrats the House and the Senate."
