Democrats have an "immediate instinct" to declare that anything President Donald Trump has done is wrong, including his decision to order the airstrike that killed key Iranian Gen. Qassam Soleimani, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Monday.

"The Iranian dictatorship has been at war with us since 1979," Gingrich told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "Their seizure of the embassy, which was illegal, was a deliberate act by the dictatorship. Last year, their Congress went into session chanting 'death to America.' Literally, all their politicians in the Congress chanting death to America. When they chant death to America."

His comments come after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J.,  wrote a letter to Trump over the weekend urging him to "immediately declassify" the full Jan. 4 notification to Congress after the Soleimani airstrike.
He added that he doesn't know if any of the material in Trump's notification reveals sources or methods used in making the decision.

"There is a great article in The Wall Street Journal by former Democratic Sen. and vice-presidential candidate Joe Liberman, who says, why can't Democrats just admit this was a bad person? He killed at least 700 Americans and badly wounded thousands. He was actively engaged in trying to drive America out of the Middle East. He should have been killed. It was an act of war because he has been waging war on us."

The difference between Trump and former President Barack Obama is, however, "so different."

"When you wage war on Trump, he is going to wage war back, and he is bigger than you are and has got a bigger military than you do," said Gingrich.
