House Democrats could "concoct a new hoax" against President Donald Trump now that his impeachment trial is over, and even if the American people do not believe the claims, the "mainstream media" will support those claims, House Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Devin Nunes, R-Calif., said Monday.
"I'm not sure they actually know how to do anything else," Nunes told Fox News' "Fox & Friends." "Old habits die hard. They've done nothing else for their entire time that they've controlled Congress, and don't forget the Democrats on the Intelligence Committee started this right after Trump was elected, so that's going over three years."
His comments came after Pelosi said last week that House Democrats will "make a judgment" on potential future investigations if they come up.
The Intelligence Committee in the House isn't meeting at this time, Nunes said, so his guess is the Democrats will start with former National Security Adviser John Bolton, whose revelations outside the Trump trial stoked calls to call witnesses to testify to the Senate.
Nunes also said the decision to remove Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman from the National Security Council last Friday, after his House inquiry testimony, was "a long time coming," and that he has long advocated downsizing the council.
"They don't need hundreds of people," said Nunes, adding that hangovers from former President Barack Obama's administration should be "removed from the White House and put somewhere else."
"I don't care where they go, but just removed from the White House," Nunes said. "We know that it's highly likely that many of the leaks that started at the very beginning of President Trump's administration came from the National Security Council and that should be very concerning."
