Attorney General Jeff Sessions responded to a threat to have him held in contempt of Congress by saying he will not comply with lawmakers seeking information from the Department of Justice.

Sessions was asked Monday about remarks made by Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., who said he will hold Sessions in contempt for not turning over documents related to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

"The Department of Justice has written him a letter," Sessions said during a speech at the United States' border with Mexico near San Diego. "The request he's made is one that the intelligence community and Department of Justice feel is not grantable. We've explained that we would be willing to talk to him about it before, the details of which I couldn't discuss."

Nunes is the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and would like to see material about the FISA program, which involves counterintelligence operations. Lawmakers have alleged the DOJ abused the FISA process when it spied on certain members of the Trump campaign ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

Nunes said Sunday, "We have to move quickly to hold the attorney general of the United States in contempt, and that's what I'm going to press for this week."
