Reps. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., and Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., reportedly have been invited to the Justice Department for a classified briefing Thursday after Nunes' latest requests for classified information related to the Russia probe.

According to Fox News, the invitation grew out of a White House meeting between Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, his deputy Ed O'Callahan, and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly.

Citing an unnamed source, Fox News reported that afterward, the three officials held a speakerphone call with Nunes and Gowdy, telling them the DOJ would work with them in an effort to get them the information they have been seeking.

Talks between the Justice Department and Nunes have been intensifying over the past day to avoid a standoff that could lead to House Republicans ultimately pursuing contempt charges against Attorney General Jeff Sessions, CNN reported.

Nunes' Intelligence Committee has been looking into allegations the Justice Department and the FBI abused the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act in their scrutiny of the Trump campaign. But is not clear exactly what information Nunes is seeking.

Republicans said Wednesday the department needed to comply with their request.

"We are entitled to it," said Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., who sits on the intel panel, according to CNN.
