Biden: Trump's Orbán Meeting Threatens Democracy

By    |   Saturday, 09 March 2024 01:33 PM EST

President Joe Biden on Friday suggested that former President Donald Trump is giving into dictatorial tendencies after meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

"I have been working like hell to unite Europe, NATO, and make sure Ukraine doesn't get crushed by this dictator in Russia," Biden told a crowd at Strath Haven Middle School in Wallingford, Pennsylvania.

"But you know, the fact is that you have a president who literally has invited Putin to do what it wants — to do what the hell it wants to do — to come into Ukraine. He thinks Putin is a strong — basically he's a decent guy. You know who he's meeting with today in Mar-a-Lago. Orbán of Hungary, who stated flatly he doesn't think democracy works; he's looking for dictatorship. The only member of NATO, that's who he's meeting with."

According to The Hill, Orbán met with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago home on Friday and posted a picture of the two of them on Facebook along with the caption, "Meeting with President Donald Trump. Make America great again, Mr. President!"

Playing on the narrative that Trump is a dictator, Biden added, "all" the European heads of state "except Orbán," come up to me, "they grab my arm, they pull me aside, I'm serious, they pull me aside and say, 'You've got to — he can't win again. Because my democracy' — their country — 'my democracy is at stake. My democracy is at stake.'"

During Thursday night's State of the Union address, Biden said one of his top issues is democracy. His address came as Vice President Kamala Harris held a closed-door meeting to expand voting and as U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland postured to fight voter ID laws that are "discriminatory, burdensome, and unnecessary."
