On the heels of an unfavorable report claiming Sen. Jeff Sessions omitted years of records from his Senate Judiciary questionnaire for his nomination to be attorney general, the Democratic National Committee is asking the Alabama Republican to recuse himself from voting on his own confirmation.
"Jeff Sessions has fiercely argued in the past that omitting information isn't just wrong, that it may also be illegal," DNC spokesman Adam Hodge said in a statement, reports The Hill.
"So what does he do once he's nominated to be the Attorney General? He omits information from his dark past, particularly when he was deemed too racist to be a federal judge. Based on his own reasoning, and in keeping with Senate tradition, Sessions must recuse himself from voting on his own nomination."
The Huffington Post reported Friday that Sessions, a Republican from Alabama, withheld decades of records from his career from the questionnaire, including interviews, op-eds, speeches and talks, questionnaires he completed for third parties and awards received, among other items.
The Alliance for Justice, a national association "committed to progressive values and the creation of an equitable, just and free society" first published the report.
