The Democratic National Convention ratings were down from 2016 numbers, but it did serve to boost Joe Biden's favorability in the latest ABC News/Ipsos Poll.
Biden was unfavorable to American adults heading into the DNC, with a net-negative favorability rating, but the four-day event has boosted his favorability from 40% to 45%. That turns Biden from being 3% unfavorable to being 5% favorable, according to the Ipsos KnowledgePanel.
President Donald Trump is going to need far more than an 8-point turnaround from the Republican National Convention that begins Monday and lasts through Thursday. Trump is 32% favorability and 60% unfavorable in the poll, which is a net negative of 28 points. It is an even-greater swath than the 23-point deficit the week prior (35% positive, 58% negative).
The poll found 50% of American adults watched none of the DNC last week, including 70% who watched none or "very little of it." Just 10% watched "a great deal of it."
It was also noted in the poll, 51% of adults said Democrats "spent too much time criticizing" vs. maintaining a balance of saying positive things about themselves.
Republican insiders told Newsmax TV on Saturday they intend to send a much more positive message to Americans about ripping Democrats for focusing on "darkness" as Biden spoke of in his final-night address.
ABC News/Ipsos Poll was conducted Aug. 21-22, 2020 using the probability-based KnowledgePanel among 714 general population adults age 18 or older "with small oversamples among Black and Hispanic respondents." The margin of error is plus or minus 4 percentage points.
