Democrats want Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., to "go away and stop being so public," according to one member of the Democratic National Committee.

Wasserman Schultz, the former chair of the Democratic National Committee, has been embroiled in scandals since the presidential election, when leaked emails showed her apparent preference for nominee Hillary Clinton over Vermont independent Sen. Bernie Sanders.

"We wish she would go away and stop being so public by doubling down on negative stories," DNC member Nikki Barnes told Politico on Thursday.

Wasserman Schultz has also taken fire for her defense of IT staffer Imran Awan, who's been under federal investigation for theft since February. She fired Awan in late July after he was arrested on charges of mortgage fraud while at an airport intending to leave for Pakistan. She repeatedly defended Awan even after two dozen of her colleagues fired his associates who were also under investigation.

"After details of the investigation were reviewed with us, my office was provided no evidence to indicate that laws had been broken, which over time, raised troubling concerns about due process, fair treatment and potential ethnic and religious profiling," Wasserman Schultz said in a written statement, according to The Miami Herald. "Upon learning of his arrest, he was terminated."

Barnes added that Wasserman Schultz left the party "in shambles" as chair, and that she continues to draw negative attention to the party as it attempts to rebuild.

"This adds to Debbie being re-branded as the Democrats' disastrous destruction," she said. "Those of us on the DNC know we have to rebrand ourselves and earn the people's trust. And unfortunately Debbie's name does not scream trust. It screams power. It screams limited access. It screams WikiLeaks now. DNC lawsuit. It screams a lot of negative things to the public. That's not how we want to rebrand ourselves."
