Donald Trump will do well in the New York Republican primary tomorrow, said Rep. Chris Collins, and he predicts that Trump would have a "really big day," according to an interview on MSNBC

Ninety-five delegates are in play and Collins believes the GOP front-runner will get 85 "at the low end."

In February, Collins became the first congressman to endorse Trump, according to CNN. When he made his announcement, he said the country needs "a chief executive, not a chief politician."

Trump's popularity is "truly amazing," Collins said. He pointed to the 50 percent rule in New York that rewards all the delegates if a candidate wins more than half of the vote. If Trump falls short of 50 percent, Collins predicted that the remaining delegates would go to Gov. John Kasich, not Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.

Collins said many areas in the state are very supportive of Trump, including Buffalo. Collins said upstate New York is "so angry about the loss of jobs, the devastation of New York over the last thirty-plus years."

"They're turning out for a nontraditional candidate," Collins said in the interview.

Collins said it's important for Trump to reach the 1,237-delegate plateau.

"We need to win this on the first ballot," Collins said in the interview.

Collins gave Cruz credit for being able to maneuver within the delegate selection process, but he said Trump has "grassroots support," which he cited as more important in the general election.

Collins disagrees with Trump about his plan to deport illegal immigrants and ban Muslims from entering the country, but "there is something to be said for someone who is willing to put forward proposals to protect our nation," Collins wrote in an opinion piece in the New York Times.
