Trump Calls Wray's Resignation a 'Great Day for America'

By    |   Wednesday, 11 December 2024 05:05 PM EST

President-elect Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Wednesday afternoon to celebrate FBI Director Christopher Wray's impending resignation, calling it a "great day for America," and saying it would pave the way for necessary reform of the embattled agency.

"The resignation of Christopher Wray is a great day for America as it will end the Weaponization of what has become known as the United States Department of Injustice," Trump wrote. "I just don't know what happened to him. We will now restore the Rule of Law for all Americans."

The incoming president then listed his grievances against Wray, including the FBI raid on his Mar-a-Lago estate in August 2022 amid an investigation into his retention of classified documents after leaving office. Under Wray's leadership, Trump said, the bureau "worked diligently on illegally impeaching and indicting me, and has done everything else to interfere with the success and future of America."

He also accused the FBI of using its "vast powers to threaten and destroy many innocent Americans, some of which will never be able to recover from what has been done to them."

In his post, Trump touted his nominee to lead the agency, Kash Patel, calling him "the most qualified Nominee to lead the FBI in the Agency's History," and said he is "committed to helping ensure that Law, Order, and Justice will be brought back to our Country again, and soon."

"As everyone knows, I have great respect for the rank-and-file of the FBI, and they have great respect for me," he said. "They want to see these changes every bit as much as I do but, more importantly, the American People are demanding a strong, but fair, System of Justice. We want our FBI back, and that will now happen. I look forward to Kash Patel's confirmation, so that the process of Making the FBI Great Again can begin."

Wray announced earlier on Wednesday that he would resign from his position as FBI director before Trump begins his second term on Jan. 20.

In his remarks to the FBI workforce, Wray said that stepping down "is the best way to avoid dragging the bureau deeper into the fray, while reinforcing the values and principles that are so important to how we do our work."

"When you look at where the threats are headed, it's clear that the importance of our work — keeping Americans safe and upholding the Constitution — will not change," he said. "And what absolutely cannot, must not change is our commitment to doing the right thing, the right way, every time."

"Our adherence to our core values, our dedication to independence and objectivity, and our defense of the rule of law — those fundamental aspects of who we are must never change," the FBI director said.

Trump signaled his plans to fire Wray, whom he originally nominated to lead the bureau in 2017, and replace him with his nomination of Patel in late November. The outgoing director's term was set to expire in 2027.
