Donald Trump — already under fire for referring to Elizabeth Warren as "Pocahontas" — turned up the heat further on Monday as he labeled the Massachusetts senator and Hillary Clinton ally a "racist" and a "fraud."
The presumptive Republican presidential nominee let loose on Warren as it was revealed she was joining Clinton on the campaign trail,
telling NBC News' Hallie Jackson:
Elizabeth Warren is a total fraud. I know it. Other people who work with her know it."
Trump hammered away at his previous accusation that Warren, who is said to be under consideration as Clinton's vice-presidential running mate, has said she has Native American roots.
"She said she's 5 percent Native American. She was unable to prove it. She used the fact that she was Native American to advance her career," Trump told Jackson.
"She made up her heritage, which I think is racist. I think she's very racist, actually because what she did was very racist."
Trump has also been called racist for referring to Warren as Pocahontas, who was the real-life daughter of a powerful Native American leader and died in 1617 at the age of 21.
Trump said he wants Clinton to tap Warren as her vice presidential pick because she's "one of the least productive senators."
