Most Republicans support former President Donald Trump retaining a major role in the party following his recent impeachment acquittal despite criticism from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., according to a new poll from Politico.
Politico found that although most registered voters, 54%, want Trump to no longer play a role in the Republican Party, the majority, 57%, of Republican voters said they want Trump to play a major role in the GOP.

Politico notes that “Republicans just can’t quit” the former president despite McConnell’s “post-impeachment effort to loosen Trump’s grip on the party.”
The poll, which has a margin of error of +/- 2 percentage points, was conducted among 1,984 registered voters nationwide from February 14-15, just after the end of Trump’s second impeachment trial. McConnell published his opinion piece condemning Trump, despite voting to acquit him, on Monday, saying that “there is no question former President Trump bears moral responsibility,” for the riot in the Capitol on January 6.
