President Donald Trump has begun a fundraising push to take advantage of the controversy over his remarks about NFL players kneeling during the national anthem.

Over the weekend, Trump insulted players who used the national anthem as an opportunity to protest racial inequality, calling them "unpatriotic," and urging for them to be fired.

On Monday, Trump's campaign staff sent an email to his supporters, calling for them to "stand with Donald Trump and the American flag," and to donate to his campaign, according to The Independent.

"When the national anthem plays, President Trump proudly stands and places his hand over his heart out of respect for our flag, our country and our heroes," the email reads.

"That's because the president supports the courageous patriots who have sacrificed to make this country great."

Former White House ethics lawyer under President George W. Bush Richard Painter decried the email, accusing Trump of "using" the anthem.
