President Donald Trump issued support for the Republican candidate for Virginia governor in a tweet that accused his Democratic opponent, Virginia lieutenant governor, of supporting the MS-13 gang.
The lieutenant governor's campaign slammed Trump and Ed Gillespie, the Republican candidate.
"They both want to cut funding to education, roll back healthcare, and divide Virginians for political gains. Looks like Ed Gillespie's ads are reaching his target audience — Donald Trump," said Northam campaign spokesperson David Turner to The Hill.
Gillespie's campaign ran attack ads that said Northam's support for sanctuary cities equals support for MS-13, according to The Washington Post.
Virginia is the only state that disallows governors from serving consecutive terms, so the governorship is an open seat. The current governor is Democrat Terry McAuliffe.
Northam has the support of 53 percent of voters in the race, according to a Washington Post-Schar School poll released Thursday.
