Donald Trump declined Wednesday to specify what "wrong things" he might have said when he expressed "regret" last week for some of his incendiary remarks during the campaign.
"I don't want to talk about that," he told Candace McCowan of WFLA-TV in Tampa, Fla. "I just think that every once in a while I could probably make statements maybe a little bit differently.
"A lot of people like my statements, frankly,” the Republican nominee continued. "I’m a very honest person.
"I’m an honorable person — but if I soften things up, in terms of statements made, that would be okay."
In North Carolina last Thursday, Trump said that "I regret" some of the things said since beginning his campaign in June 2015.
He vowed a White House effort that would "offer the American people a new future of honesty, justice, and opportunity.
"Sometimes, in the heat of debate, and speaking on a multitude of issues, you don't choose the right words or you say the wrong thing," Trump said in Charlotte. "And, believe it or not, I regret it.
"I do regret it, particularly where it may have caused personal pain," Trump said. "Too much is at stake for us to be consumed with these issues."
Trump's comments have slammed Hispanics, women, Muslims, veterans and other groups — and they have driven donations and endorsements from the nominee and have been linked to his sliding poll numbers.
