Trump's Actions on Trade, Pipelines Align Him With Dems

Three of President Donald Trump's acts in the opening days of his term have united him with some Democrats up for reelection who are on the same page as him.

For one, Trump's executive order that withdrew the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal was a move the majority of Democrats supported because they all agreed it would be harmful to U.S. jobs.

And as far as Trump's orders to move forward with plans to build the Keystone XL and the Dakota Access pipelines, those actions were supported by select Democrats who are on board with the idea. That list, according to Roll Call, includes Sens. Claire McCaskill (Missouri), Heidi Heitkamp (North Dakota), and Joe Manchin (West Virginia).

Those three lawmakers are up for reelection in the 2018 midterms and represent states Trump won in November.

"It's consistent with his pro-jobs message," Heitkamp told Roll Call. "It's consistent with his message of building our infrastructure, and I think both of those will go a long way to signaling that American jobs are critically important."

Added a Democratic consultant: "The nice part about the way this starts out is that for the populist and progressive wing of the party, there's the TPP executive action, and for the conservative wing, there's Keystone. There's something for everybody."

Trump's move to pull the U.S. out of the TPP also drew praise from Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, and labor union bosses.
