President Donald Trump met with two red-state Democratic senators Monday to talk about moving forward on immigration legislation.
Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Sen. Doug Jones, R-Ala. — both considered centrists in the party — headed to the White House as the Senate voted to approve a stopgap spending bill to end a three-day government shutdown.
Manchin had earlier tweeted about being part of "bipartisan group of senators" who banded together to end the shutdown.
Manchin and Jones were two of the five Democrats who broke with their leaders last week and voted for the spending bill, but enough Democrats withheld their support from the measure in an effort to force progress on legislation to address immigration policy.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed Trump's meeting with the two Democrats but declined to provide details.
Trump also met with several Republican senators earlier Monday to talk about immigration, including Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and Sen. David Perdue, R-Ga., The Hill reported.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is pledging to bring up immigration legislation next month if agreement is not reached by Feb. 8.
