President Donald Trump's lead lawyer on the team dealing with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation has resigned.
John Dowd confirmed his resignation to The Associated Press and said that he "loves the president" and wishes him well.
Dowd quit because of his inability to get the president to follow his advice regarding his public statements regarding the probe, the New York Times reports.
Dowd has been the lead lawyer since last summer, when longtime Trump personal lawyer Marc Kasowitz stepped down, but the latest shakeup to the legal team has been rumored for several days.
Dowd was rumored to be leaving earlier in the week after making a plea himself to the Justice Department to shut down the Russia probe, an act he later had to take ownership of despite doing it at Trump's insistence, the Times reported then.
"I’m sitting here working on the president’s case right now," Dowd told the Times on Monday night.
Dowd has considered resigning several times since joining Trump's legal team last summer, the Times reports.
It's unclear which attorney will assume Dowd's role, especially given reports that Trump wanted to fire attorney Ty Cobb.
Jay Sekulow or newly hired Joseph diGenova are also possible picks for the president.
Dowd's resignation comes at a tricky time for Trump as Mueller moves forward with his attempt to have a sitdown interview with the president, a move that Dowd was staunchly against.
