The White House doubled down Monday on the propriety of deporting illegal immigrants without the benefit of courts or judges, insisting "just because you don't see a judge doesn't mean you're not seeing due process."
At a press briefing dominated by President Donald Trump's zero-tolerance policy for illegal immigration, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders defended Trump's controversial Sunday tweet for eliminating due process at the border.
"Virtually all Americans agree that no illegal alien should set foot on American soil and go through a four- to five-year process to be removed," Sanders said. "Thousands are removed every month without seeing an immigration judge as a result of procedures in current law, including voluntary removal and [expedited] removal."
"Because you don't see a judge doesn't mean you're not seeing due process," she declared.
She added Trump is "focused on securing our borders to prevent the crisis at the border from getting worse."
"There are other ways for removal – there are thousands of illegal aliens that are removed every month that don't see judges," she insisted.
"Sometimes that is through voluntary removal and sometimes through expedited removal. Again the president's ultimate goal is to have a secure border and people aren't coming into the country illegally, but we have a system that works and the people that come into the country come in through a legal system."
