Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., on Wednesday defended President Donald Trump, who has been widely criticized for his remarks alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying that Trump "has a different technique."
"He’s doing things that are a direct affront to Russia. I don’t care if he misspeaks or if he says the wrong thing," Hunter said in an interview on Fox News’ "Fox & Friends."
Trump, during a press conference following his private meeting with Putin, said: "I have President Putin; he just said it's not Russia. I will say this: I don't see any reason why it would be."
The president backtracked on Tuesday, saying he misspoke and meant to say "wouldn’t" instead of "would." He did not clarify his statement that "President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today," or why he did not directly denounce Russia’s interference in the 2016 election.
"He has a different technique, that’s why I voted for him, that’s why the American people elected him," the congressman added, saying that Trump "doesn’t want to act like one of those guys who you just played talking here, saying all of those words."
"What he wants to do is go get things done. I have no problem with it. My trust is in the commander in chief."
