President Donald Trump probably would not last long if he were being tortured, GOP Rep. Duncan Hunter, a veteran who served in three overseas tours in Iraq and Afghanistan after the 9-11 attacks, speculated Friday night.
"Not very long," the California lawmaker told HBO's Bill Maher during his show, "Real Time," drawing laughs from the audience.
"He'd probably torture his torturers, talking about the election: 'Nobody thought I'd get to 300,' " Maher responded, mocking Trump over his boasts about his presidential win.
Hunter's words came while he and Maher were discussing Sen. John McCain and the comments made by a White House staffer about his cancer battle earlier this week.
They also discussed the incident that occurred during Trump's presidential campaign, when he said McCain was not a war hero "because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured."
Hunter Friday night called that comment "pretty bad," but admitted he'd made similar comments while joking with his own friends in the military.
"I've made the same John McCain joke with my friends, who are other Marines," said Hunter. "'If I were a better pilot, I wouldn't get shot down.'... I've made that joke. But I make it to my friends, not on national TV as the contender for the U.S. presidency. It shouldn't be done."
