Rep. Scott Taylor, R-Va., lost his bid for re-election Tuesday night.

NBC News called the race around 10 p.m. ET, saying Democrat Elaine Luria secured enough votes to squeeze out a close victory in the race to represent Virginia's 2nd Congressional District.

The victory pads what was projected to be a Democratic majority in the House.

With roughly 96 percent of the vote counted, Luria held a lead of less than 4,500 votes.
