President Donald Trump is "pretty solid in his thinking" on moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem, though he will officially announce his decision Wednesday, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Tuesday.
"The president, I would say, is pretty solid in his thinking at this point," Sanders told reporters at the daily briefing. "It was a very thoughtful interagency process, in terms of specifics.
"This is the best decision for the United States."
Sanders said the president would officially announce his decision Wednesday and senior administration officials would brief reporters on the issue later Tuesday.
Trump told Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday he would move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Abbas's spokesman said, though no timetable was given.
"President Abbas warned of the dangerous consequences such a decision would have to the peace process and to the peace, security, and stability of the region and of the world," the spokesman, Nabil Abu Rdainah said.
The president was to decide Monday whether to sign a legal waiver delaying by six months plans to move the embassy.
Previous administrations have signed the waiver at regular intervals for more than two decades.
Sanders played down opposition and concerns about violence expressed by Abbas other world leaders, saying President Trump "did speak with a number of leaders this morning.
"He's going to continue to have conversations with relevant stakeholders," she said. "But, ultimately, he'll make what he feels is the best decision for the United States.
"He spoke with five leaders," Sanders added later. "That's hardly indicative of everybody across the globe.
"But, certainly, he's going to continue to have conversations with different leaders from across the world."
