Former Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor mocked Donald Trump for backing away from his hardline stance on immigration Thursday with a series of tweets suggesting the Republican presidential nominee cribbed former primary candidate's Jeb Bush's plan.
Cantor, who endorsed Bush in the Republican primaries, lost his own 2014 House primary to a political rookie because of a lean toward amnesty in immigration reform, as TPM's Esme Cribb wrote, which led to Trump mockingly tweeting he did not want the endorsement of a loser anyway.
Cantor is not the only one mocking Trump for adopting Bush's immigration policy. MSNBC's "Morning Joe" host Joe Scarborough did as well Thursday.
Also, as The Hill reported Thursday, Trump had mocked Bush for claiming he can "fix it" in a tweet.
Trump then used the same term he once mocked in a tweet Thursday morning.
The Trump immigration firestorm is just the latest in a roller-coaster ride of a presidential race. It had appeared a Trump staff shakeup had the Republican moving in the right direction in the polls – one that claimed he leads in Bush's state of Florida – but Trump's flip-flop Thursday did not sit well with conservatives.
