Former Attorney General Eric Holder is set to campaign in Wisconsin in support of a candidate for the state Supreme Court, as Democrats look to put the national focus on that race, Politico reports.

Holder has thrown his support behind Rebecca Dallet, a circuit court judge in Milwaukee County, in the April 3 election, according to the website.

But as the campaign heats up, Democrats insist it was Republicans who first put the spotlight on the race through the involvement of the National Rifle Association in support of Dallet's opponent, Michael Screnock, a Sauk County circuit judge.

"This campaign is about the people of Wisconsin but the outside spending for our opponent has certainly brought additional interest to this race," said Dallet campaign manager Jessica Lovejoy.

The Journal Sentinel newspaper reported Screnock has defended the endorsement he received from the NRA.

"They want justices on the Supreme Court who will follow the rule of law and interpret the Constitution as originally written," he said.

An internal Dallet poll shows her leading by 11 points, Politico reported. But Screnock is claiming his opponent is too liberal for the job.

Although there will not be any campaign rallies, Holder is expected to appear at three events Thursday and Friday in Milwaukee and Madison, including a roundtable discussion with Black Leaders Organizing for Communities.
