Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., revealed Monday he is joining the growing field of Democrats running for president.

Swalwell made the announcement during a taping of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," which will air Monday evening. The show posted a video on Twitter of Swalwell making the news.

Swalwell began the segment by explaining how he has traveled the country and talked to regular Americans about the challenges they face and the frustrations they have with elected officials.

"I see a country in quicksand, unable to solve problems and threats from abroad, unable to make life better for people here at home," he said. "Nothing gets done.

"I'm ready to solve these problems. I'm running for president of the United States."

The crowd then erupted in applause, to which Swalwell replied, "It's official. Boy, did it feel good to say that."

Swalwell has been outspoken about his disagreement with Republicans on many issues and his belief President Donald Trump worked with Russia to defeat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.

Swalwell was mulling over a presidential run and indicated last month, if he were to run, his top campaign issues would be healthcare and racial equality.
