Richard Painter, the top ethics lawyer in the George W. Bush administration, said President Donald Trump's attacks on the FBI are making special counsel Robert Mueller's job easier.

Painter's comments came in a tweet Sunday in response to Trump's twitter blast against FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe.

Trump had specifically mentioned McCabe in a series of tweets including these:

Newsweek noted the FBI and Mueller are investigating Trump's presidential campaign, including whether the president obstructed justice by firing FBI Director James Comey in May.

Newsweek reported it is possible McCabe could be a witness in that investigation.
