Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has spent more time in recent months than he ever has talking about political issues, which includes taking subtle shots at Donald Trump.
The 31-year-old, whose net worth
according to Forbes is $48.2 billion, has spoken out against Trump's past comments on banning Muslims from the United States and building a wall at the Mexican border.
During his
keynote speech at Facebook's F8 Developers Conference last week, Zuckerberg called out Trump without mentioning him by name.
"I hear fearful voices calling for building walls and distancing people they label as others, for blocking free expression, for slowing immigration, reducing trade and, in some cases around the world, even cutting access to the Internet," Zuckerberg said.
Last December, Trump said the U.S. might want to think about
shutting down parts of the Internet in order to combat terrorism.
Facebook's Internet.org project is aiming to ensure everyone across the world
has online access. The program is currently serving 19 million people in 38 countries.
"It is no surprise that tech CEOs are trying to use their platform to influence political change and that they may be quite trusted, given the low amount of trust that people feel toward politicians as a broader group," researcher Margie Omero of Purple Strategies told
The Hill. "That said, people have more interaction with the product than they do with the CEO."
Zuckerberg has also spoken about immigration, even helping start the
FWD.us advocacy group along with several other leaders in the tech industry. That group pushes for immigration reform that would "give everyone the opportunity to participate in" the economy, according to its website.
