President Donald Trump on Thursday tweeted his support for Ivanka Trump's comment the press was not the "enemy of the people" — saying instead the designation belonged to the "fake news, which is a large percentage of the media."

"They asked my daughter Ivanka whether or not the media is the enemy of the people," the president said in his post. "She correctly said no."

At an event hosted by Axios earlier Thursday, Ivanka Trump responded "no" when asked whether the media were the "enemy of the people."

"No, I do not feel that the media is the enemy of the people," the senior White House adviser said, apparently breaking with the longtime positon of her father.

However, Trump did say she has been the subject of reporting that she knew was "not to be fully accurate."

In a heated exchange with CNN chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta during a briefing with reporters, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders declined to dispute President Trump's claim against the media.

"I appreciate your passion," Sanders eventually said. "I share it.

"I've addressed this question. I've addressed my personal feelings.

"I'm here to speak on behalf of the president," she said. "He's made his statements clear."

Acosta then left the room in protest.
