FBI Director James Comey will disclose Wednesday whether his agency is investigating ties between Russia and the campaign of President Donald Trump, Rhode Island Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse said Tuesday.

Whitehouse, 61, who is in his second term, told CNN that Comey promised he would disclose the information in a March 2 meeting with him and Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.

Comey assured them he would confirm if an investigation was occurring "and the scope of their Russia-Trump investigation because he had not been able to at that point say that there was one," Whitehouse told CNN.

Last week, the senators asked the Justice Department to disclose evidence to support Trump's claim former President Barack Obama wiretapped his Trump Tower telephones during the campaign last year.

Graham and Whitehouse are leading one of three congressional investigations into Russia's election-related tampering.

Comey is expected to testify Wednesday before a subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee, on which both senators serve.

The FBI has not responded to a request for comment from CNN.

Graham told the cable network Tuesday he would be "tough" on Comey during the session.

The other congressional panels investigating the Trump campaign's alleged ties with Moscow include the Senate Intelligence Committee and the House Intelligence Committee.
