A source close to the White House said Robert Mueller's decision to raid the offices of Trump's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, could be the breaking point for the president, CNN's Jim Acosta reports.
"This is starting to sink in in Trump World, and Trump World is not pleased," Acosta said on air during "The Situation Room" with Wolf Blitzer.
The source said Mueller had "gone rogue" and stepped outside the boundaries of the Russia probe. Trump previously discussed firing Mueller, and Monday told reporters, "we'll see what happens. . . . many people have said, 'you should fire him,'" when asked if he would follow through.
Mueller is investigating whether there was any coordination between Trump's campaign team and the Russian government as part of the Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. But it was his referral that led to the FBI's search of Cohen's office and hotel room Monday afternoon.
The bureau seized records related to, in part, a $130,000 payment Cohen arranged to adult film actress Stormy Daniels before the election. Daniels alleges she had an affair with Trump in 2006, but the White House has denied the claim. Also seized were communications between Cohen and Trump.
Trump slammed the FBI raid as a "disgraceful situation" and an "attack on our country."
"It's a total witch-hunt," Trump told reporters.
"It's an attack on our country in a true sense. It's an attack on what we all stand for, so when I saw this and when I heard it, I heard it like you did, I said that is really now in a whole new level of unfairness."
