President Donald Trump called out the politically biased makeup of FBI special counsel Robert Mueller's team in via Twitter on Sunday morning.
Trump's rebuke comes a day after Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., pushed for the Senate Judiciary Committee to hold a special hearing on the White House's own politicization of the special counsel's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and potential Trump campaign collusion.
"During my four decades in the Senate, I have never before seen our nation's career, apolitical law enforcement officials so personally and publicly maligned by politicians — indeed, by our president," Sen. Leahy wrote to Senate Judiciary Comittee Chairman Chuck Grassley.
"And I have never been so concerned that the walls intended to protect the independence of our dedicated law enforcement professionals, including special counsel Mueller, are at risk of crumbling."
President Trump has long considered the Russian investigation a "witch hunt" orchestrated by partisan politics over a dissatisfaction over Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential election loss to a political outsider.
Proponents of the probe have claimed Americans tied to President Trump's campaign had coordinated with Russian state operatives to sow discord in the U.S. democratic process on social media and might have assisted in the hacking of the Democratic National Committee and Hillary campaign chairman John Podesta's emails.
