While President Donald Trump may have won a partial victory with the Supreme Court for his travel ban, federal judges around the country are hampering his ability to move his immigration enforcement agenda forward, The Washington Times reported.
Courts are limiting his crackdown on sanctuary cities and blocking him from deporting illegal immigrants targeted for removal, the newspaper said.
Here is a look at some of those cases:
- A judge in Michigan ordered a halt on all deportation plans for about 200 Chaldean Christians arrested in the past two months, who were slated to be sent back to Iraq. Nearly every one of them has a criminal record, the Times reported.
- A judge in Atlanta ordered the Homeland Security Department to reinstate the temporary deportation amnesty for illegal immigrant Dreamer Jessica Colotl, whose past made her a target for deportation, according to the Times.
- A judge in California ordered the Border Patrol to improve its treatment of illegal immigrant children caught sneaking across the border. The judge said she was concerned by stories that illegal immigrants were being kept in dirty rooms without private toilets.
Those judges were all appointed by President Barack Obama, the newspaper noted.
"Almost all of the judges are acting outside of established law," said Hans von Spakovsky, a senior legal fellow at The Heritage Foundation who served as a Justice Department lawyer in the Bush administration.
And The Washington Post noted Trump has been "embroiled in an ongoing battle with the courts" since he has taken office and has launched personal attacks at the judiciary.
"And judges have fired back, criticizing both the president and his executive orders — frequently, his immigration orders," the Post's Samantha Schmidt wrote.
