The father of James Comey said it was President Donald Trump who was "nuts," following a statement on Friday where the president reportedly called the former FBI director "a real nut job," The Hill reported Saturday.
"I'm convinced that he's nuts," J. Brien Comey, 86, a Republican who formerly served as a borough councilman, told NorthJersey.com. "I thought he belonged in an institution. He was crazy before he became president. Now he's really crazy."
"I never was crazy about Trump," he added.
Trump has called Comey a "showboat" and "grandstander" following his abrupt dismissal last week. The New York Times on Friday reported during a visit in the Oval Office with two Russian officials earlier this month the president called Comey "a real nut job" and said firing him eased "great pressure."
Lawmakers questioned Comey's firing due to an investigation the FBI was conducting about possible Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and claims of collusion between Trump and Russian officials when the president was running for office.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, present at the meeting, refutes the claim Comey's firing was discussed with Trump, saying on Saturday, "We did not touch on that topic at all," according to Sputnik News.
Comey is expected to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee. The Senate Judiciary Committee has also called for the former FBI director to testify before their panel.
