More than of half of Americans disapprove of how Donald Trump is handling his presidential transition, a new Gallup poll reveals.
"President-elect Donald Trump continues to garner historically low approval for his transition performance, with 51 percent of Americans disapproving of how he is handling the presidential transition and 44 percent approving," Gallup notes in the survey results.
"Last month, the public was split on this question, with 48 percent approving and 48 percent disapproving."
Here is how the poll breaks down:
- Trump's 44 percent approval compares to Barack Obama's 83 percent during the comparable time period in 2009.
- George W. Bush had a 61 percent approval coming into his inauguration in 2001.
- Bill Clinton's approval was 68 percent leading up to his inaugural in 1993.
- 32 percent rated Trump's Cabinet appointments outstanding or above average, compared to 45 percent for Obama's appointments in Jan. 2009; 38 percent for Bush's in Jan. 2001; and 32 percent for Clinton's in Jan. 1993.
"Whatever the reasons, Trump's approach since Nov. 8 has not softened Americans' concerns about him…" Gallup notes.
"Trump's inauguration speech on Jan. 20 presents a major opportunity for the soon-to-be 45th president to alter how Americans view him, but after that, his image will depend more on how his actions affect real-world outcomes including the economy, healthcare costs, taxes and national security."
