Americans are divided on whether the news media has covered President Donald Trump and his new administration fairly in their first weeks in Washington, a new poll shows.

The Gallup survey released Friday finds that 36 percent of respondents think the press has been too hard on Trump, who has derided the media as the "opposition party" and frequently condemns the media as "dishonest."

But 28 percent of the respondents say it hasn't been tough enough and 31 percent think the coverage has been about right.

The rift breaks down along party lines.

A whopping 74 percent of Republicans think the press has been too hard on Trump.

But among Democrats, 49 percent say the media hasn't been tough enough _ and 40 percent say the coverage has been about right.

The survey's margin of error is plus or minus 4 points.
