A record number of Americans say they think it is better when the president and Congress are members of the same political party, according to a new poll.

A Gallup poll released Friday shows that a majority of Republicans prefer one-party control.

Poll results show:

  • 41% of Americans prefer one-party control of the federal government.
  • 23% of Americans say they would rather have one party control the presidency and the other control Congress.
  • 32% of Americans say what party controls what part of government makes no difference to them.
  • 52% of Republicans say they prefer one-party control.
  • 43% of Democrats believe it is better to have one-party control.
  • 31% of Independents say they are OK with one-party control.

The previous high-record of Americans who said they preferred a one-party government was in 2012 when President Barack Obama was running for reelection, according to Gallup.

A year later, pollsters said a shift occurred when the federal government was fighting over funding for Obamacare. During that time period, a record-low of 25% favored having one party in control.

According to pollsters, a plurality of Americans typically say party control of government makes no difference. In addition to 2012 and this year, the other exceptions were 2002 and 2018, both midterm election years, and 2005.

Over the past five years, an average of 36% Americans have said they prefer a unified party government.

Gallup notes that Americans tend to favor one-party control because they want to maximize their political party’s power.

The poll was conducted before Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death, so it is unclear how Americans feel currently. Because Republicans control the presidency and the Senate, it is likely that Trump’s nominee for the court will be confirmed before the election.

Gallup conducted its annual Governance survey of 1,019 American adults between Aug. 31-Sept. 13. The margin of sampling error is ±4 percentage points.
