President Donald Trump on Wednesday has requested that the Department of Justice and FBI speed up the investigation into the death of George Floyd, who was killed by a Minneapolis police officer this week.

“At my request, the FBI and the Department of Justice are already well into an investigation as to the very sad and tragic death in Minnesota of George Floyd,” Trump tweeted Wednesday evening.

Trump added: “I have asked for this investigation to be expedited and greatly appreciate all of the work done by local law enforcement. My heart goes out to George’s family and friends. Justice will be served!” he added.

He referred to the death as a "very sad event" earlier Wednesday and said he anticipated getting a report after he returned from his trip to Florida.

Floyd was an unarmed black man who died on Monday in Minneapolis while in police custody.

Cell phone video showed Floyd saying he couldn't breathe while an officer jammed his knee into his neck while another officer held him down.

People rushed to the streets following Floyd’s death, which led to a clash with police.

The FBI is investigating the death in conjunction with local authorities. Minneapolis Police Department has fired all four police officers who were involved in the death.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey (D) on Wednesday said the officer who pushed his knee into Floyd's neck should be charged for the incident.
