DC Lawyer Sekulow Backs Kingston in Ga. Senate Runoff

By    |   Thursday, 03 July 2014 05:03 PM EDT

Washington lawyer Jay Sekulow has endorsed Georgia Rep. Jack Kingston in the Republican Senate primary runoff election later this month.

"Jack Kingston is a true conservative, willing to stand up for religious liberty and defend the Constitution," Sekulow said in a statement released Thursday. "With our fundamental freedoms constantly under assault by Washington liberals, now more than ever we need tested and proven conservative fighters like Jack Kingston working on our behalf."

Sekulow is chief counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice, which is representing 41 conservative groups in a federal lawsuit over targeting by the Internal Revenue Service.

He is announcing his support for Kingston as a private citizen. The organization does not endorse political candidates.

Kingston, 59, who has been in the House since 1993, is squaring off against businessman David Perdue in the July 22 primary runoff. Perdue won the May 20 primary, 30 percent to 26 percent, but a runoff is required because neither candidate won 50 percent of the vote.

The runoff winner will face Democrat Michelle Nunn in an election to replace retiring GOP Sen. Saxby Chambliss.

Kingston was endorsed by Newsmax in the May race.

"Jack Kingston is a man of integrity dedicated to sound conservative principles, from cutting spending to defending First Amendment freedoms," Sekulow said. "I encourage all Georgia conservatives who love liberty to support Jack Kingston and send him to the Senate to renew America and safeguard our rights under the Constitution."

Kingston praised Sekulow for his leadership and his support.

"Jay's role in defending the fundamental freedoms so important to our nation's character cannot be overstated," Kingston said. "I am proud to have the endorsement of such a consistent voice for liberty and a true fighter for America's founding principles."
