New PAC Wants Gingrich to Challenge Warner in Va.

By    |   Wednesday, 18 September 2013 06:31 PM EDT

A new PAC has been formed to encourage Newt Gingrich to run for the Senate in Virginia.

The Draft Newt PAC wants the former Republican House Speaker to challenge Democrat Sen. Mark Warner, who is popular in the state and has not drawn strong opposition, The Hill  reports.

The PAC was formed by Andrew Hemingway, who served Gingrich's 2012 presidential campaign as New Hampshire state director and national digital fundraising director, the Hill reports.

"We want a credible challenger to Mark Warner, and no one could do what Newt could do to fight — and win," Hemingway said in a statement. "U.S. Senator Newt Gingrich would be an immediate game-changer, giving conservatives another voice that would take the fight to the Obama administration."

The prospects of persuading Gingrich, who represented Georgia in the House, to run, seem highly uncertain, the Hill reports.

Gingrich, who has lived in the Virginia suburbs for years, recently became a host of the re-launched "Crossfire" on CNN.

In addition, Warner's approval ratings have been rock-solid in the swing state, the Hill reports.
