Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich threw some verbal jabs at the Department of Veterans Affairs Friday, calling it a "total disgrace."

During an interview with The Washington Post, Gingrich spoke about America's veterans and the government programs that help support them.

"The Veterans Administration is a total disgrace and it's embarrassing that the senior veterans' organizations endorsed the current veterans' secretary because he has failed totally to clean it up," Gingrich said.

"And they did it because they prefer the current status where they have access to [VA] offices, rather than making sure veterans are taken care of."

Gingrich, a supporter of President-elect Donald Trump who will serve in an unofficial and outside role of senior planner for the incoming administration, also challenged Trump to take a closer look at the VA.

"Do you think people who kill veterans should stay in their jobs … [should] we make the government union people happy and keep in their jobs people who we know broke the rules and killed veterans?" Gingrich asked.

Gingrich served in the House from 1979-1999. He called on Trump to start a "straight-out war" on federal bureaucracy during the Post interview.
