President Donald Trump was supposed to spend the weekend at his Bedminster golf resort in New Jersey, but changed course as protests continued across the country, NBC News reports.
Two people familiar with Trump's weekend trip told NBC the White House ditched the trip because of "bad optics."
The itinerary included traveling to New Jersey from Maine where Trump visited a plant manufacturing coronavirus testing supplies on Friday. The president would then spend a "working weekend" at his private club, sources told NBC.
But as demonstrations protesting the death of George Floyd, a black man, who was killed by a white police officer, continued, the New Jersey part of the trip was nixed and Trump returned to the White House.
Sources involved in the decision-making said Trump agreed with his advisers his visit to his club could be problematic.
Trump has not been to Bedminster since last August. He is scheduled to return to the golf resort to host an in-person fundraiser for his re-election campaign this upcoming weekend, according to Politico.
