Republicans have launched a public shaming tour of Chuck Schumer over the Democratic senator's plans to stall the confirmation hearings of President-elect Donald Trump's cabinet picks, the Washington Examiner reported.
The theme: The Senate confirmed your guy's appointments 8 years ago, we expect the same now.
Trump's press secretary Sean Spicer on Monday called Schumer's plans to stall "frankly sad."
"In 2008, when President Barack Obama came in, the Republican-controlled Senate confirmed seven of his nominees before they took office and five the following week," Spicer told CNN Monday.
Then it was Texas Sen. John Cornyn's turn Tuesday.
"If I'm not mistaken, on the day that President Obama was sworn into office … there were seven Cabinet members … who were confirmed that day – seven," Majority Whip Cornyn was quoted by the Examiner. "To me, that demonstrates the sort of good faith and accommodation that this Senate should continue."
With confirmation hearings set to start next week, Schumer has said he wants 8 of the nominees – including Rex Tillerson and Jeff Sessions – to undergo at least two days of hearings and in separate weeks, so that no more than two Cabinet picks can face hearings in the same week.
However, GOP Senate communications Tuesday reminded Schumer of his own words in November before Trump defeated Hillary Clinton:
"We have a moral obligation, even beyond the economy and politics, to avoid gridlock and get the country to work again … We have to get things done."
